Top 11 Most Famous Sports Athletes in India (Part 3)

Sania Mirza

Before Sania Mirza, there were some famous male players from India such as Vijay Amritraj, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati. But no woman had ever named herself in the sport until Mirza entered the scene.

She achieved world number one in the women’s doubles category when she was paired with great tennis, Martina Hingis. Mirza has won many grand slam titles playing in mixed and mixed doubles and is one of the highest paid sports in India.

Pankaj Advani

Pankaj Advani is the 18th World Billiard and Snooker champion. He won his first world title at a young age of 18. He is the only one in the history of the game that has won both billiard and snooker IBSF World Titles as well as the World Professional Billiards Championship.

While mastering just one format of the game is hard enough, Advani has specialized in both billiard and billiard and has done it with confidence.

Sakshi Malik

Sakshi Malik made history during the 2016 Rio Olympics by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win an Olympic medal, a bronze medal in the 58 kg category.

Professional wrestlers, like Malik and sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat, deserve credit for not having the courage to take part in a completely male sport (at least in India), but are proud by winning medals at sporting events like the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.

Abhinav Bindra

Abhinav Bindra is the first Indian individual athlete to win a gold medal in Olympic games. He won the 10 meter Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. India has not won a gold medal since the men’s hockey team won first prize at the 1980 Olympics.

Bindra is also a former world shooting champion and a gold medalist in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. His shooting career started early with Bindra becoming the youngest participant in the 1998 Commonwealth Games just 15 years old.
