Munnar Hill Station, Kerala

If someone wants to capture or describe the whole beauty of Munnar hill station then it is very difficult. Munnar hill station is situated in God's own country, Kerala. Munnar is also called as the Kashmir of South India. Situated on the confluence of three mountain streams Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala, Munnar has rich collection of lakes, reservoirs, forests and tea estates. Anamudi, the highest peak in south India is close to this place. Anamudi is an ideal spot for trekking. There is a wildlife sanctuary in the Eravikulam-Rajamala area in the Munnar forest division. During the British rule in India, Munnar was the summer resort of the Government officials. The natural beauty, calmness and mild cold climate throughout the year make it the favorite tourist place of both Indians and foreigners.

Munnar hill station is situated at an altitude of 5000 to 8000 Ft above sea level. Neelakurinji in Munnar is known for its exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands. Munnar is also known as a center for tea trade too. There are over thirty teagardens in and around Munnar. Munnar is a favourite hill station for honeymooners.

What one can see in Munnar?
Devikulam Hill Station : This is one a small hill station very near to Munnar. This small hill station is famous for its velvet lawns and exotic flora and fauna. This place has also Devi Lake with its mineral waters and picturesque surroundings. The lake is also ideal for trout fishing.

Potheamedu : Potheamedu is only six km away from Munnar. This place offers an excellent view of the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations. This place is also an ideal place for long walks and trekking along with rolling hills and breathtaking scenery.

Pallivasal : This place in Munnar is the first Hydro Electric project in Kerala and 8 km away from the hill station. It is place of immense scenic beauty. For visitors who want to see Hydro Electric project can enter here in working days.

Attukal : This place is famous in Munnar for its panorama of waterfalls and rolling hills. This place is 9 km from Munnar and located between Munnar and Pallivasal. Attukal is not only famous for its scenic beauty but also ideal for long treks.



Nayamakad : Located between Munnar and Rajamala, Nayamakad is 10 km away from Munnar hill station. This is a land of scintillating waterfalls. The water falls down a hill from a height of about 1600 meters. Beautiful and enchanting surroundings make this place an excellent picnic spot.

Mattupetty : Mattupetty Lake and Dam is a beautiful picnic spot situated at the height of 1700 m from sea level. This place is known for its highly specialized dairy farm. Around Mattupetty is The Shola forests, ideal for trekking. Mattupetty has a beautiful rose garden.

Chithirapuram : Chithirapuram is a small village which has several beautiful, unique and old sleepy little cottages, bungalows, old playgrounds and courts. This place is 10km from Munnar and also famous for its picturesque tea plantations.

Lock Heart Gap : Lock Heart Gap is 13 km away from Munnar hill station and an ideal place for adventure tourism and trekking. Although this is adventure lovers place but it also provides panoramic view for other visitors.

Eravikulam National Park/Rajamala : Eravikulam National Park is 97 sq km park at the distance of 15 km from Munnar hill station. This national park is a home to the Nilgiri Tahr, Nilgiri Langur, sambar and the Lion-tailed Macaque. This is really an ideal place to visit.

Munnar hill station is not only famous for its beautiful and scenic surroundings but there are also several trekking Points in Munnar like Anamudi, Rajamala, Meesapulimala, etc. For the adventure seekers there is lot more in the hill resort of Munnar. One may try fishing in the Devikulam Lake. There is one more adventure activity in this area which is becoming more popular than other adventure sports and that is paragliding. One of the best options and adventure sport to explore the beauty of the Munnar is a bicycle ride. How to reach Munnar?
The nearest airport is Cochin/Kochi at the distance of 130 km from Munnar. The railway station is also in Cochin which is well connected to all the major cities and states. The excellent road network links the hill resort of Munnar with the other important places of Kerala. KSRTC runs a daily bus service to and from Kochi.
