Buddhist Centres in Andhra Pradesh

Hardly do travellers have any idea that the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh also features a number of Buddhist sites. Do not be surprised if you are the first to hear about a stupa (as exquisite as the Sanchi stupa) in Andhra Pradesh. Places like Chandavaram and Dhulikatta are known for housing Buddhist stupas and viharas. During your visit to Chandavaram (Pakasam district), you will be amazed to see the architectural similarity between the stupa located here and the one standing at Sanchi. A.R.Saraswati has the credit of discovering the Buddhist monuments at Nagarjuna Konda in Nagarjunasagar. Innumerable caves and stupas at Sankaram also attract a lot of attention. And who doesn't know about the statue of Lord Buddha standing in the middle of the Hussain Sagar Lake. Anupa, Bavikonda and Thotlakonda are other popular Buddhist destinations in the state. Looking at the frequency of stupas, caves and other Buddhist structures in Andhra Pradesh, it becomes quite evident that the religion had a strong base here. Moreover, from this state, Buddhism also spread across to the Far East.
